New patients

Your first visit, step by step

Starting physical therapy should feel simple. Here's what to expect, what to bring and what to wear.

What to expect at your first visit

  1. 1

    Request your appointment

Tell us your preferred location, what's going on and your insurance. No physician's referral is needed in Maine.

  2. 2

    Tell your story

At your first visit, your physical therapist will ask about your history, your symptoms and what you want to get back to.

  3. 3

    Get assessed

Expect a hands-on look at how you move, including strength, mobility and the movements that bother you.

  4. 4

    Leave with a plan

You'll hear what we think is going on and what the next steps are, including exercises to start on.

What to wear

Dress for movement.

  • Comfortable clothing you can move in

Think workout clothes or loose layers.

  • Shorts for knee, hip or ankle visits

They let your therapist see and reach the area.

  • A tank top or sleeveless shirt for shoulders

Or a top that is easy to adjust.

  • Your running shoes for gait analysis

Wear what you normally run in.
